I painted this trying to capture the atmosphere of Salem Harbor—not one particular moment, but 400 years of them. Old Salem and new Salem, the harbor, the history, and all the energy that has passed through there. Different times seem to exist at once, with Turner’s atmospheric paintings somewhere in the back of my mind.
